Going For Green
Editor’s Note: Despite overwhelming community support for preserving Denver’s last big acreage of open space, a deep-pocket developer has teamed up with City Hall in efforts to pave the way for development.
This submission of news stories and opinion pieces detailed self-styled David versus Goliath efforts in 2001 by a local group Save Open Space Denver, to preserve the conservation easement on the property, which is a defunct golf course. SOS Denver’s efforts resulted in a decisive citywide vote to protect the easement. The newspaper’s ongoing coverage was credited for providing voters an understanding of the complexities of the issue.

Our coverage of the Park Hill Golf Course resulted in a second place award in the Public Service category in the 2022 Top Of The Rockies regional journalism contest. The Greater Park Hill News also received second place honors in the same category (Public Service) by the Colorado Press Association in 2022.
