Soup For a Cause At Blessed Sacrament
Homemade Soup In Homemade Bowls To Benefit Hungry People
By Mia Schleelein, BSCS student and Noelle Jung, BSCS art teacher, Special to the GPHN
Blessed Sacrament Catholic School’s middle school students have made more than 100 handmade ceramic bowls in preparation for this year’s Empty Bowl Night.
The purpose of the event is to raise money that will be used to benefit Saint Elizabeth of Hungary’s Sandwich Line, as well as the Park Hill Food Pantry. In 2014, Blessed Sacrament students raised more than $1,400 for these two charities, and this year they are hoping to do even better. This event coincides with Blessed Sacrament’s Canned Food Drive, during which students in all grades bring nonperishable food items to school that are then donated to a Catholic Charities local food bank.
The middle school students’ Empty Bowl Night is an art lesson, a fundraiser, and a service project all wrapped up in one event. The bowls are made during the school year in art class by students using a mold. After bisque firing, they create unique and colorful designs using food-safe ceramic glaze. The bowls are fired again in the school’s kiln. Then they are hand-washed, and ready for soup.
After the event, middle school students, their art teacher and a few chaperones, take a field trip to a local grocery store and shop for groceries that they deliver to both St. Elizabeth of Hungary and the Park Hill Food Bank.
Besides creating the bowls, Blessed Sacrament’s middle school students are responsible for making the evening’s main course – homemade soup, which they will serve to families and friends during the Empty Bowl Night.
There will be multiple choices of soups and their ingredients will be available. For unlimited soup and bread in a disposable bowl, the cost is $10. Unlimited soup and bread in a handmade ceramic bowl of your choice – which you get to take home – will cost $15. Prices are per person.
The event will be held on Nov. 17 from 6 to 8 p.m., in Campbell Hall at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church on Montview and Elm Street. It is open to the public, and everyone is welcome. For more information contact Blessed Sacrament at 303-377-8835.
