Staff report
Jack Seward is 14 years old and an 8th grader at McAuliffe International School, at the historic Smiley campus at 23rd Avenue and Holly Street. Here is his story.
“I have grown up in Stapleton and first became involved in scouting at the age of 6 when I joined a local Cub Scouts Pack.
“In that Pack I was one of the first scouts to earn the arrow of light and complete the entire Cub Scout program. After earning the arrow of light I joined Denver Troop 62 and began my journey to Eagle Scout. When I earned the rank of Life Scout I began the search for my Eagle project. My school had just moved to the Smiley campus and I asked the principal if there was anything that I could do to help the school and leave a legacy for the community.
“When I began planning this project it was a small task of building some wood garden planters but the project soon morphed into something much bigger. The first change I made was swapping material from wood to brick. The red brick will coordinate with the beautiful old school building. With the new material came new issues to address. Now the project consists of six brick planters, removing 680 square feet of dirt and grass, and installing an irrigation system. Once completed I hope that the community will use the garden to grow vegetables and help keep the neighborhood healthy.
“Over the summer I plan to get ready for high school and continue in scouting. I need to raise $3,800 to build the garden and I am $1,300 away from that goal. I also need 25 volunteers on May 9, 10 and 16 when we will be building planters, installing irrigation and moving dirt and gravel. I am excited to build this garden and contribute to my community.”
