Flower Power
36 Volunteers Sign Up To Tend Beds In City Park
By Maria Flora

Responding to a call for help, no fewer than 36 volunteers have stepped forward to join the Adopt-a-Flowerbed program for City Park.
In coordination with the Greater Park Hill Community, Inc. parks and open space committee, City Park Friends and Neighbors and City Park Alliance, the volunteers will be working with the Denver Parks and Recreation maintenance crew and horticulturalists. The volunteers will plant and maintain flowerbeds in the city’s crown jewel park west of Park Hill from spring to fall.
The team will meet with Adam Smith, field superintendent for Denver Parks and Recreation, early this month to review the total number of committed volunteers and formulate a plan for the growing season. We will form six-person teams, which will maintain their adopted beds under the supervision of DPR horticulture and maintenance staff. The volunteers stepped forward in response to cuts in city funds that would have resulted in little to no maintenance of the beautiful flowerbeds in Denver’s parks.
A meet and greet and training with DPR’s horticultural staff is in the works for sometime this month or in early May.
If you are interested in volunteering and have not yet responded, email me at
mjflora@msn.com and let me know the time commitment you want to make, and whether you may have friends or neighbors interested in volunteering, either individually or part of a six-person team.
Finally, are you aware of any public flower beds in need of help in the Greater Park Hill area? If enough volunteers come forward, we could start Adopt-A-Flowerbed programs in other neighborhood parks and other areas of our neighborhood. Please contact me about other parks or areas that you think need our help.
Thanks to all of you volunteers! With your help, we will keep City Park – and beyond — blooming and beautiful in Greater Park Hill.
