Building The Urban Canopy
Through its Earth Day Tree Sale, The Park People makes it fun, relevant, and easy to celebrate Earth Day by offering homeowners the opportunity to purchase affordable trees to plant on their property. The annual event has increased significance this year, since the discovery of Emerald Ash Borer in Boulder in 2012. The Park People, in conjunction with the Office of the Denver City Forester, has been preparing for the invasive insect’s possible arrival in Denver and working to reduce its impact by proactively planting 20 percent more trees in 2016. The sale is open to everyone, not just residents of Denver, and is Saturday, April 16. Homeowners can purchase fruiting, flowering, and shade trees to plant in their yards. All species are available in limited quantities, and will be sold on a first come, first served basis. The sale is from 9 a.m. to noon at the City Park Greenhouse at 2500 E. 23rd Ave. – which is near 23rd & York, close to the Denver Zoo. Visit www.theparkpeople.org, or call 303-722-6262 for more information.
Tragedy and Triumph on Mt. Evans
Brad and Melissa McQueen, a well-traveled local couple, will speak about being stranded on Mt. Evans during a freak spring blizzard in May 2001, and will talk about the trials and tribulations of that experience and their physical and mental recovery. They’ve written a book about their adventure, Exposed: Tragedy & Triumph in Mountain Climbing, that will be available to purchase after their presentation. The speech is part of the Lowry Speaker Series, and will be Tuesday, May 3, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Eisenhower Chapel, 293 Roslyn St., Denver (on Lowry). Admission is free; no reservations are necessary.
