Green-Winged Teals are the smallest dabbling ducks in North America, but they sure are noisy. The males make clear, decidedly non-ducklike whistles, and the females answer with downright feeble quacks. As noted by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the males have cinnamon-colored heads with gleaming green crescents that extend from the eye to the back of the head. In flight, both sexes flash deep-green wing patches. This Green-Winged Teal was photographed at the Bluff Lake Reserve by Park Hill resident Mark Silverstein.
