What You Need To Know For Nov. 3
On Monday, Oct. 5, the League of Women Voters of Denver will present briefings at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church on the upcoming Nov. 3 citywide election, as well as a forum on amending the U.S. Constitution. Both are free and open to the public. The four City and County of Denver issues on the ballot include:
• Referred Question 1A – Adams County IGA/Revenue Sharing
• Referred Question 2A – College Affordability
• Referred Question 2B – Marijuana Tax Retention
• Referred Question 2C – Revenue Bonds and Tax Extension National Western Center and Colorado Convention Center
Background will be presented, followed by discussion on the pros and cons for each question. The second half of the evening will include a briefing on a study the national league is beginning on amending the U.S. Constitution. The program starts at 6 p.m. in the McCollum Room, at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St. It is free and open to the public.
Wild West Meets FarmFest
The Urban Farm’s 6th annual FarmFest is Saturday, Oct. 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Urban Farm, 10200 Smith Rd. Here’s what’s on the agenda: A historical re-enactment by the Buffalo Soldiers of the American West, hands on history and the Denver Sheriff’s Posse;
an Old West town and local vendors with a variety of products from including organic produce, artisan crafts and more; music by Rudy Grant and the Buffalo Riders; a 4-H booth and 20 games and rides including stick horse races; a cake walk and hay rides; pumpkin patch, crafts and hands-on activities; free workshops and demonstrations; food trucks, drinks and snacks. $2 admission, $1 activity tickets. It’s The Monster Mile
Join SAME Cafe (So All May Eat) for its first ever Monster Mile on November 1, as it celebrates its ninth anniversary. Come see how fast you can run a mile at 5,280 feet. For serious runners, the true test of running ability is not a 5k or a marathon, but a mile at your best pace.
For those of you more interested in fun than run, come decked out in your finest Halloween outfit and put on your running shoes. Go ahead and dress up like a milk carton or a Rubik’s cube – you only have to run a mile in it. There are prizes for individual and group costumes. The race takes place at the property of the Stanley Marketplace, at 2501 Dallas St. in Aurora, which is slated to open in Spring, 2016. Architecture & Pipe Organs
Join Historic Denver, Inc. and the Denver chapter of the American Guild of Organists for the 4th Annual Pipe Organ Tour. The event will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, and includes organ music, architecture, and history. The Organ Tour will begin at the Trinity United Methodist Church at 18th & Broadway, and will proceed by foot to Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church. At each church you will hear about the history and architecture from a local historian before listening to a selection of music. Each organist will also share the history and characteristics of each organ. The Lowry Speaker Series presents “An Evening with Amelia Earhart” on Tuesday, Oct. 20 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Eisenhower Chapel, 293 Roslyn Street. Admission is free; no reservations are necessary. Amelia Rose Earhart, namesake to the famed Amelia Mary Earhart, who attempted to fly around the world in 1937, spent the last eight years working as a television news anchor, covering breaking news, traffic and weather in Denver for 9News and Los Angeles. Earhart is the youngest woman to fly around the world in a single engine aircraft, and has been a passionate aviatrix since her first flight lesson at the age of 21. She is a seeker of all things adventurous, and is an accomplished public speaker. She is the president of the Fly With Amelia Foundation, a nonprofit that grants flight-training scholarships to young women, aged 16 to 18. The Fly With Amelia Foundation also fosters aviation and aerospace opportunities for people of all ages through aviation-based educational STEM opportunities, in partnership with Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum in Denver, CO. See What The Elves Have Done
The Assistance League elves have been busy for months redesigning Christmas decor such as wreaths, swags, miniature trees and table centerpieces to combine with the multitude of ornaments, lights, Santas, snowmen, miniature trees, linens, paper goods, tin boxes, stuffed animals and dolls. Join the Assistance League for its Santa’s Back Room Thrift Mart at 1400 Josephine St. from Oct. 26 through 31, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Nov. 1 to Dec. 22, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Selections also include women’s clothing, shoes, bags, jewelry and hats; men’s clothing, shoes and hats; children’s toys and an array of housewares. Assistance League is an all-volunteer, nonprofit organization. All proceeds from Thrift Mart are designated to 10 philanthropic programs provided to underserved schoolchildren, adults, seniors and victims of assault in the Denver Metropolitan area. Lectures & Pumpkins At Montview Presbyterian
On Friday, Oct, 2 activist, pastor and renowned speaker Father Gregory Boyle will discuss his book “Tattoos on the Heart, The Power of Boundless Compassion,” about his work with the gangs of East L.A. On Sunday, Oct. 4 Montview will hold a parenting forum beginning at 9:15 a.m. about depression and suicide. Facilitator is Suvi Miller, adjunct faculty member at University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work. It is free and no reservation is required. And on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. Montview holds its 11th annual pumpkin carving event in Fellowship Hall. Also referred to as “Some Beer, Some Wine and Competitive Pumpkin Carving,” the event begins with a spaghetti dinner. BYOP [P = Pumpkin]. Cocktails for a Cause (CFAC) will host an event to support Gateway Battered Women’s Services, a local Denver nonprofit, from 5:30 – 10 p.m. on Oct. 21 at the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum. Gateway Battered Women’s Services provides safe shelter for women and children fleeing violence in their home, a 24-hour telephone refuge for immediate crisis assistance, short- and long-term support counseling, and advocacy services within the City of Aurora’s criminal justice system. Gateway provides meals, clothing, personal care items, bus passes and assistance in accessing community resources. In addition, Gateway’s Emergency Shelter accepts pets into shelter. At this event, CFAC will collect specific items to help Gateway Battered Women’s Services serve their constituents: from snacks, to pajamas, underwear and socks, to basic over- the-counter medications. All event attendees are asked to bring something as their “admission ticket” into the otherwise free event where wine and food is served. Cooking for Life
On Saturday, Oct. 3, Project L.I.F.E. and Cooking Matters will host an interactive nutritional, budget-friendly presentation on how to shop smarter & healthier at the grocery store. The program focuses on empowering low-income families with the culinary skills and nutrition knowledge they need to feed their families on a tight budget. The free presentation is at 3840 York Street Suite #100. It will run from noon to 2 p.m. and includes information on nutrition models, food labels, and samples of recipes for all participants. Upon seminar completion each participant will receive a reusable Cooking Matters grocery bag, recipe/resource book, and a $10 gift card to King Soopers.
