Bugland: Where There Is Water
Familiar Bluets are the brightest of blue, making these damselflies easy to spot as they dance together and dart around. The bluets aren’t too picky about where they live, as long as there is water around — think ponds, streams, creeks, lakes, marshes, swamps and even puddles. The female lays fertilized eggs just under the surface of the water, while the male watches over her. Once the eggs hatch, the baby damselflies live underwater until they are big enough to come out and start flying on their own. This Familiar Bluet couple was photographed at Bluff Lake last summer by Mark Silverstein.
