The Great Horned Owl is also known as a hoot owl, and is the most widely distributed true owl in the Americas. The eyes of Great Horned owls are amongst the largest and most powerfully acute in the animal kingdom. As The Nature Conservancy notes, the Great Horned has keen hearing and sharp vision in low light – both adaptations for hunting at night. An owl can not only see what is right in front of it, but can rotate its head a full 270 degrees to see what is behind and around it. This Great Horned Owl was photographed at the Bluff Lake Nature Preserve by Park Hill resident Mark Silverstein.
