Ice Cream and Magic at City Park
By Siobhan Lloyd
Dozens of Denverites descended on City Park Pavilion to enjoy the annual Ice Cream Social on May 29 that was co-hosted by City Park Alliance and Denver Councilman Albus Brooks. A diverse crowd of young and old gathered to eat ice cream from Boulder Ice Cream Company – complete with the whole sundae shebang with sprinkles and chocolate sauce.
They were treated to live performances from the Denver Municipal Jazz Combo as well as Denver Municipal Band – the oldest professional concert band in the United States dating back to the late 1860s. They were entertained by Sven Jorgensen, whose tricks included juggling torches and bowling pins, and balancing on an oversized ball.
Booths featured hat makers, face painters, political candidates and registered neighborhood organizations. A bubble machine churned out the bubbles.
The Denver Zoo and Denver Museum of Nature & Science sponsored the event and provided interactive educational booths. People milled about, chatting and socializing while children zipped around in play.
“I love doing this event,” said Jorgensen. “It really brings the community together and I think that is really important in this day and age. Plus it’s a beautiful setting.”
