GOVE CUPOLA FINDS NEW HOME AT 200 GRANT
Former Gove teacher and Gove Historical Society president, David Wells (pictured at right), with assistance from former Gove student Cynthia Hamby Kelly and society members, successfully secured and moved the last remaining Gove cupola to the Art Students League of Denver at 200 Grant.
“For me, it’s important to have something that reminds me of my past because we are all so much a product of our prior experiences,” said Wells.
Four cupolas originally adorned the roof of the original Aaron Gove Junior High School. Prior to its demolition in 1975, the four cupolas were removed. Two of them were placed in a storage yard and were either discarded or sold for salvage, the third was placed in the interior courtyard of the new Gove Middle School, and the fourth was placed in the Gove Gardens on the west side of Colorado Boulevard, but either discarded or sold for salvage in 2011.
The last remaining cupola was placed at the Art Students League on October 19, 2013, and will serve as a landmark dedicated to preserving the history of both Gove school buildings as well as the legacy of Aaron Gove, DPS Superintendent, 1902. Gove Junior High/Middle School played an important role in the Park Hill, Mayfair, and Congress Park communities for almost 100 years.
“It is crucial that communities do all that they can to preserve the history of their neighborhood,” said Wells. “The cupola, which is now 103 years old and one of the most recognizable structures in northeast Denver, serves as a physical reminder of our past.”
The Gove Historical Society is a 501(c)3, non-profit organization founded in 2012. For more information, visit govehistoricalsociety.wordpress.com.

PARK HILL KIDS MEET MANNING
On October 30, a national commercial for Papa John’s Pizza was shot at 5151 E. Colfax Ave., the site of the new Abbey Tavern, which opened for business two weeks later on Tuesday, November 19, and future site of Nuggs Ice Cream. The front building was temporarily turned into an “old style” Papa John’s Pizza Parlor featuring an 80’s theme, complete with cars and extras dressed in clothing of that era.
