27th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Marade
Members of the community joined members of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, the Prodigal Son Initiative, and 5050 Sports Performance at a pre-Marade breakfast in the Park Hill Community Center at 33rd and Hudson. “Nobody is talking about arson anymore, we’re all talking Anschutz,” said Terrance Roberts, as he looked across the street, past the new courts at Holly Peace Mural Park, to the new walls of the Anschutz Center. Roberts hopes this the first of many pre-Marade breakfasts.
At City Park, the 28th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Marade festivities, organized by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Colorado Holiday Commission, began at the “I Have a Dream” monument around 9 a.m. Loudspeakers were set up to allow participants to listen to the President’s Inaugural Address as they gathered for the march. Opening remarks were made by Denver Police Chief Robert White, Senate President John Morse, Denver Auditor Dennis Gallagher, and Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan. The Escuela Tlatelolco choir performed, and members of the Aztlan Nation performed blessings on the monument. The marade route followed Colfax from the City Park Esplanade to Civic Center Park.
