Weekend Food Program Kicks Off
Program Fills Nutritional Gap For Students
By Sierra Fleenor
Executive Director, GPHC, Inc.
Vegetable and fruit harvests are coming in, kids are headed back to school, and we’re dreaming about pumpkin-flavored everything over here at GPHC. As we move into the fall, our Weekend Food Program, providing nutritional support to Park Hill school children, is starting up again, which means we need your support.
We need volunteers and we need in-kind and financial donations. To fully build out the program and address all the nutritional gaps in Park Hill schools, we would need to raise $10,000. It may sound like a lot, but every bit of support helps. If you’d like to learn more about the program and how you can be a volunteer or donor, check out our website greaterparkhill.org/programs/weekend-food-program/ or call our office at 303-388-0918.
Last school year, the Weekend Food Program served 175 students a total of 35,875 meals and 14,350 snacks.
Donations from neighbors and our partnership with Food Bank of the Rockies made this work possible. As the need continues to grow in our neighborhood, we hope you will consider a donation to this exceptional program.
We’d like to thank our existing donors who have donated hundreds of pounds of food and other in-kind donations. Since June 5, our farm stand has distributed more than 1,500 pounds of fresh food from Denver Food Rescue and neighbors like you. Our food pantry continues to serve dozens of households monthly and your donations keep our neighbors fed.
Volunteers have been key to keeping all the donations we receive sorted, labeled, and distributed to our clients. You may have seen them working at the farm stand on Mondays or bouncing back and forth between pantry storage and the shopping area on Mondays and Wednesdays. We would be lost without our volunteers and we are grateful for your hard work, your willing spirits, and your infinite senses of humor.
Membership renewals continue to pour in and we thank each business, individual, and family for their contribution. Your memberships support the programming of our organization and keep GPHC strong. If you have not renewed or begun your membership, you can do so by filling out the form in the newspaper, emailing our office at info@greaterparkhill.org or going online to: http://greaterparkhill.org/get-involved/become-a-member/
This month, we need some specific items for our food pantry and farm stand: jars and cans of fruit, canned meats, hamburger/tuna helper, turkey chili, can openers, spatulas, fresh veggies, fruit, eggs, milk, and other fresh items, travel and regular sized shampoo and conditioner, shaving supplies (razors and cream), size four diapers, dish soap, dishwasher detergent, laundry detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, lip balm, deodorant (for men and women), toothpaste, and toothbrushes.
For the Weekend Food Program, we need individually wrapped cereal bars and granola bars, individual fruit cups and applesauce, small boxes of raisins, boxes of macaroni and cheese, boxes of individual servings of instant oatmeal, and individual cereal bowls. Please remember we cannot distribute opened or expired food.
We accept donations Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at our office at 2823 Fairfax St. If those hours do not work for you, you can also donate non-perishable items for our food programs at the Park Hill Branch of Denver Public Library (4750 Montview Blvd.) or at Cake Crumbs (2216 Kearney St.) during their business hours.
Thank you to all our donors, volunteers, and members listed below. You are the backbone of our organization. If you would like to become a volunteer, donor, or member please visit our website at greaterparkhill.org or contact us at info@greaterparkhill.org or 303-388-0918.
