There Goes The Awning
In mid-May and without warning, the metal awning over the stretch of several businesses on the west side of Fairfax between 28th and 29 avenues came crashing down, pulling along with it bricks from the building’s facade. No one was hurt. Building owner Dean Brown, Jr. said recent heavy snows were likely contributing factors. At right, Cory Thomas of Hillside Barbers surveys the damage. Thomas was thankful there were no customers entering or leaving the shop when the awning came down. But the episode was just one more headache he has had to endure during two years of ongoing noise and disruption as the residential/commercial Park Hill Commons project is being built directly across the street. Currently, bulldozers are also loud at work across the street from the barbershop, building what will eventually be a public park. “It’s just killing my business,” Thomas says. Photos by Cara DeGette
