Talk of the Neighborhood

The following is a synopsis of what was discussed during the April 5 Greater Park Hill Community, Inc. monthly meeting. The next community meeting is Thursday, May 3, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at 2823 Fairfax St. The June meeting will be Thursday, June 7 beginning at 6:30. The meetings are free and open to the public. Everyone is welcome.
District 2 Police Update
A sergeant from District 2 provided an update on crime and safety in the neighborhood during the month of March. A rash of gang-related activity occurred in northeast Park Hill, including shots fired. Property crime as a whole in that area is down, though police are encountering some burglaries, mostly crimes of opportunity that occur when people leave their garage doors opened or their doors unlocked. District-wide, crime is down 11 percent since last year.
Events Update
Greater Park Hill Community, Inc. Board Member and Fundraising Chair Lana Cordes provided an update on several upcoming events. These events include the Park Hill Garden Walk on Sunday, June 24, the 4th of July Parade, and the Home Tour and Street Fair on September 24th. The committees that are organizing all these events are looking for volunteers to help out, including planning and working the day of the events. GPHC, Inc. Update
Board Chair Tracey MacDermott provided an update on several programs being sponsored by the Registered Neighborhood Organization, including the Bee Careful campaign to learn how to protect the pollinators among us. The Greater Park Hill Community Yard Sale is Saturday, May 5. People can sign up to participate, or check out the map of participating yard sales throughout the neighborhood on Facebook, at facebook.com/events/190338435083060/.
Planning and Zoning Update
Planning and Zoning Chair Bernadette Kelly reported that Denver Councilman Rafael Espinosa has proposed an amendment to the city’s zoning code requiring adjacent neighbors be notified when property owners are seeking zoning changes. She recommended a formal vote of support from GPHC, Inc. The board unanimously voted to support the amendment.
