Libraries Embrace Sustainability

It’s 2020, and the Park Hill Branch Library can see clearly!
To remove the pall that climate despair can sometimes be, the library is focusing on sustainability. In short, sustainability is about making choices now that will not deplete future resources. We are zooming in on topics such as waste, non-grass lawn options, local farmers, pollinators, and composting. We are also teaming up with Denver experts to offer community members ways to participate in conversation and action towards growing our collective and individual stewardship skills.
It can be easy to succumb to the immobilizing symptoms of climate despair. When that happens, I have found two things that pacify. I think about what I can do at home like switching over to reusable bags, eating locally when possible, and being open-minded to new habits that are better for the earth. It has also been beneficial to implement a sustainable self- care practice. This looks different for everyone but could include things like setting app timers, taking a walk, adjusting boundaries when necessary, and building a support system.
The library is here as your source for information and support in seeking what sustainability means for you. Check out lots of documentaries on our online streaming service, Kanopy. Climate Refugees: The Global Human Impact of Climate Change is a great one to start with.
All Denver branch libraries closed on March 12, to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus – and that includes all library programs, classes, events, ideaLABS, and outreach activities, including bookmobiles. The reopening date was initially set at April 12, however, check denverlibrary.org for online updates in the event that they remain closed beyond that date. Also, check out the website for plenty of great online library resources to help make staying at home more tolerable.
Plan to join us on June 16 for the annual Bike to Work Day and stop by to check out some seeds from the seed library. Stay tuned in months ahead for other sustainability-related programming.
