No One Should Be Hungry
We have been operating food programs, in some form, for as long as this organization has been in existence. It’s one of the things we’re best known for in Park Hill. In case you are not familiar, here’s the scoop on what we do to help feed the community.
Our flagship program is the Emergency Food Pantry. It operates on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. out of our headquarters, at 2823 Fairfax St. We can serve anyone with a Park Hill address up to nine times per year. Clients receive a three-day supply of food for each person in their household.
To register, simply come by anytime during our office hours and be sure to bring proof of address for all registering adults and proof of presence for any children in your household. Depending on what provisions come in via our donors, we stock a changing variety of everything from fresh veggies and bread, to canned meat and fruit, to baking mixes, baby supplies, pet supplies and toiletries.
The Weekend Food Program helps address the nutritional gap some students experience over the weekend. To ensure such students at Park Hill Elementary and Vickers Boys & Girls Club aren’t left wondering what they’ll eat when they’re not at school, we provide a weekly bag that includes two breakfasts, two lunches, and two snacks.
During the growing months, we operate a Free Farm Stand. Our partnerships with Denver Food Rescue and Dahlia Campus Farms and Gardens bring us a weekly haul of fresh produce and other goodies. Neighbors with an overabundance in their gardens also share their overstock and GPHC contributes whatever we grow in our onsite garden. This program is open to everyone and the goal is simply to distribute fresh produce to anyone who can use it, in order to avoid waste.
To wrap up the year, we offer a huge Thanksgiving program. Park Hill residents are given priority, but we’ve been fortunate these last few years to have been able to serve everyone who has registered, regardless of where they live. A food box, proportionate to household size, is provided to each registrant. The box includes vegetables, yams, cranberry sauce, gravy, stuffing, potatoes, rolls, pie, and a turkey.
To help us continue this work, please consider making a donation to our food programs. You can drop off donations at our office on Mondays and Wednesdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m, and also at Cake Crumbs Bakery at 2216 Kearney St., and the Park Hill Library at 4705 Montview Blvd. during their hours of operation. Financial donations can be made on our website at greaterparkhill.org/join-us/donate.
Here is a list of items we currently need to support our food programs:
• Canned Fruit
• Cereal (hot and cold)
• Coffee & Tea
• Ensure drinks
• Hearty soups/stews
• Individually packaged snacks (crackers, fruit snacks, etc.)
• Packaged meals (like ramen or ravioli)
GPHC is a volunteer and donor-based organization. A big thank you to our donors and volunteers this past month. We couldn’t do it without you!
