Have Fun And Do Taxes
The Denver Asset Building Coalition is looking for volunteers for the upcoming tax season to help out low-income families with free tax preparation services.
Free volunteer training and certification is underway at the Mi Casa Resource Center at 360 Acoma St. for the 2015 tax season, which begins Saturday, Jan. 24. With locations throughout Denver, Aurora and Jefferson County, and hours of operation in the evenings, weekends and even during the day, the coalition has volunteering opportunities that fit most people’s schedule.
Accounting experience or education is not required. Last year, the coalition worked with 130+ different volunteers from diverse backgrounds, including retirees, students, seasoned tax lawyers and single mothers and fathers looking to gain new skills and meet new people. Volunteers are able to build their resumes by adding new skills, and many take advantage of leadership opportunities with the organization.

A Bountiful Growing Season
This year Produce for Pantries gardeners grew and donated over 42,600 pounds of garden grown produce to more than 30 Colorado organizations.
Produce for Pantries Executive Director Dana Miller reported that, as of October, more than 50 Coloradans signed up to be gardeners for the organization, and more than 30,000 pounds of food had been donated to approximately 30 organizations.
Produce for Pantries addresses hunger in Colorado, including Park Hill, by encouraging community, school and home gardeners to plant, grow and share produce with those in need via food pantries and hunger-relief organizations in their neighborhoods. Gardeners can find the location and contact information for food pantries in their area by calling the Hunger Free Colorado Hotline at 855-855-4626.
Produce for Pantries is a collaboration that includes LiveWell Colorado, Hunger Free Colorado, Grow Local Colorado, Slow Food Denver, Denver Urban Gardens, Plant a Row for the Hungry, Metro CareRing, Cooking Matters, No Kid Hungry, The Table, Denver Food Rescue, Denver Yard Harvest, St. John’s Episcopal, the Beanstalk Foundation, the Sunshine Food Project and Brighton Shares the Harvest. P4P encourages Colorado home, school and community gardeners to plant, grow and share fresh produce with food pantries/hunger-relief organizations, including the Greater Park Hill Community Food Pantry.
