New Year, New Resolve
Thanks For A Great 2018, Park Hill. See You In The New Year!
By Amelia Eckles
Admin. Asst., GPHC
From all of us here at Greater Park Hill Community, Inc., Happy New Year! We hope your holidays were filled with family, friends, and new memories. We celebrated all that we were able to accomplish in 2018 – none of which would have been possible without your support.
If one of your New Year’s resolutions was to get more involved in the community, look no further. There are countless ways for you to join in our work.
School will soon be back in session after the holiday break, which means that our Weekend Food Program is back at it as well. This program serves students in need from the Boys and Girls Club, Park Hill Elementary and Roots Elementary. Each student receives a bag of food for the weekend to feed their growing bodies and minds.
As is true for all of our programs, there are many people to thank for making the Weekend Food Program happen. Our group of weekly volunteers work hard, and have fun doing it. We are so thankful for your spirits of joyous giving. We are also thankful to the rotating crew of parents who pick up and drop off bags to Park Hill Elementary. It truly does take a village to ensure that the children in our community are cared for and we want to thank everyone who’s stepped up.
To those who extended the spirit of giving to GPHC the past holiday season, know that your donations had a direct impact on people in our community.
There are many hands involved in running our Food Pantry. We have seen an increase in clients over the past few months and have been able to help every one of them, thanks to your support. We have welcomed many food and financial donations recently that have been such an encouragement to us, and to our clients. We have also welcomed a few new folks to our crew of existing volunteers. Thank you all for giving your time, care, and concern to our Food Pantry clients.
Our Food Pantry uses a client choice model, meaning that our clients take items that they will use, whether for reasons of preference, familiarity or need. That said, we do our best to stock the pantry with items that are most popular with our clients. We are currently asking for donations of the following items: canned fruit, canned meats (including tuna, salmon, chicken, Vienna sausage, and Spam), canned ravioli, hearty soups, chili, tomato products (tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, salsa, etc.), ramen, condiments, salt, flour, sugar, cooking oil, tea, toilet paper, plastic sandwich bags, hygiene products (lotion, shampoo, conditioner, soap, shaving cream, razors, toothpaste, and toothbrushes), cleaning products, laundry soap, and reusable shopping bags.
We do the same for our Weekend Food Program, which is currently in need of: individually packaged snack foods like granola bars (without nuts, preferably), fruit snacks, cookies, crackers, and cheese crackers.
If you’d like to donate to our volunteer-led organization, or learn more about us, give us a call at 303-388-0918 or visit our website at greaterparkhill.org.
If you’d like to give in the form of a food donation, stop by during our office hours. We are at 2823 Fairfax St. and are open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Both Cake Crumbs and the Park Hill Branch Library have generously offered up donation bins that are available for drop off during their business hours as well.
