Little Free Libraries
Take A Book, Return A Book A Worldwide Phenomenon
by Tara Bannon Williamson
You may have noticed charming birdhouse-sized book versions of the “take a penny, leave a penny” tray popping up all over the neighborhood and across Denver.
But did you know that the Little Free Library Movement is nationwide with a website (littlefreelibrary.org) that offers a gallery, resources, and a map pinpointing many of these tiny treasure-troves?
These cute Little Free Libraries are a true Do-It-Yourself embodiment of a love of reading, books, libraries, community, and sharing. These qualities align with what we all love and value about our neighborhood. Neighbors recommending, loaning and discussing books amongst themselves builds community by broadening our horizons and deepening our connections to one another.
The Park Hill Branch Library is hosting a Little Free Library Celebration and Mixer on Nov. 18 at 6:30 p.m. Attendees will enjoy sharing success stories and lessons learned from your Little Free Library and swap out books from libraries around the city.
A local woodworker will be on hard to talk affordable and straightforward construction plans. If you don’t have your own Little Free Library yet, but are curious about them, you are also welcome to come and learn more.
We hope to see you at this event for some socializing and refreshment with neighbors and fellow book lovers in a casual setting.
