Latest News from the Park Hill Bookstore
An update from the nonprofit, member-operated Park Hill Community Bookstore, 23rd and Dexter, now in its 42nd year of operation
Many of you may remember Harold Baer, longtime volunteer at the store, who passed away recently. With the assistance of Harold’s friends and family, dozens of books from Harold’s estate have been donated to the bookstore. Not surprisingly, many of the better books in the collection are about cooking and wine. Harold was a gourmet cook and wine expert and published his own wine newsletter.
The bookstore, with the help of board member Miriam Goetzke, recently donated a variety of books to the new Vickers Boys and Girls Club, with emphasis on young adult fiction and nonfiction.
Thanks to funds raised at a spring event with photographer/writer John Fielder, the bookstore has installed a new heating unit, warmly welcomed by volunteers and customers accustomed to a heating system that was almost as unpredictable as it was noisy.
The bookstore’s annual Holiday Sale for Members will run from November 29 to December 24. Members will receive a discount of 20%, on any item in the store, except jewelry. Memberships at the store are only $15 for individuals, $20 for families, and $10 for seniors and students. In addition to the ongoing discount of 10% on any purchase, new members receive 10 book credits, which can be applied to used paperbacks (1 credit each) and used hard covers (2 credits each). Sustaining members ($40) receive 20 credits. Volunteers receive a 15% discount. Teachers who are members may obtain 10 free books for their students.
Recent visitors to the store may have noticed a “cleaner,” more user-friendly arrangement of books, including a thinning-out of books that have been sitting unsold for a significant period of time. Most of those books are donated to a variety of charities, including the Salvation Army, ARC, shelters, senior centers, correctional institutions and other nonprofits.
Over the next few weeks, you’ll notice work for-sale by local artists.
Recently elected to the Board of Directors of the bookstore: Bettina Basanow (president), Gary Beasley (vice president), Wendy Kaeuper (secretary), Jack and Pam Farrar, Barbara Moe, Alex Klein, Miriam Goetzke, Kathleen Schroeder and Levi Darrell.
The bookstore is open Monday through Friday, 10 to 6, Saturday, 9 to 5, and Sundays, 11 to 3. The phone number is 303-355-8508.
