Winter Driving Will Arrive Eventually
In late September, the Colorado Department of Transportation launched an easy-to-use website — codot.gov/travel/winter-driving — that features a new 511 map that allows drivers to safely navigate Colorado roads. The website offers features that help travelers plan their route ahead of time, and prepare for road or lane closures or adverse road conditions. In addition to the website,
CDOT also launched the new COtrip Planner mobile app about road closures and detours. The COtrip Planner app provides statewide, real-time traffic information, and works on smartphones and tablets that operate on iOS and Android platforms.
Driving in adverse weather conditions can be a challenge in Colorado, both for newly-driving teenagers and adult drivers new to Colorado. The site features resources for learning how to better maneuver in snow and being prepared for adverse conditions. For the most up-to-date winter driving resources, information and tips, visit winter.codot.gov.
MLK Jr. Marade Is Jan. 17
The Martin Luther King, Jr. Marade is scheduled to return as an in-person event on Monday, Jan. 17, though the rise of the COVID-19 omicron variant may result in the cancellation of the march to honor the legacy of the civil rights leader for the second year.
As of press time, the live event is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. Participants meet at City Park, just west of Park Hill, at the MLK Statue in the southwest area of the park at 9:30 a.m. After a series of speeches by local dignitaries, participants march down the Esplanade in front of East High School to Colfax, then west up Colfax to the Colorado State Capitol. Check the website drmartinlkingjrchc.org and the group’s Facebook page DrMLKJrColoradoHolidayCommission for updates.
See Your Own Garden Grow
Do you live in an apartment but still want to play in the dirt? The Eastside Growers Collective of Park Hill, a community garden at 34th & Elm Street, has garden plots available for growing your own veggies this summer. The plots cost $20 to $30 per season, depending on size.
This is a great opportunity to teach children about gardening, as well as growing your own food. Contact Charlotte at eastsidegrowerscollectiveph@gmail.com for more information.
CSU Spur Opens At National Western Complex
CSU Spur is a new, free educational year-round public destination in Denver designed to provide educational resources to K-12 students, families and visitors about food, water and health. CSU Spur will open to the public beginning on Saturday, Jan. 8. It will be open every day from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. during the National Western Stock Show throughout January at the National Western Complex northwest of Park Hill. The official grand opening event for CSU Spur is on Saturday, Jan 15 from noon to 6:30 p.m., and everyone is welcome.
Corrections and Clarifications
In our “Thank You” to advertisers in the December issue, information about Realtor Natalie Hengel was listed incorrectly. This is the correct listing and information for Ms. Hengel:
Natalie Hengel 8z Real Estate: 440-552-9731 https://nataliehengel.8z.com/
Also in the December issue, the organization City Park Alliance was omitted as being one of the groups that mobilized volunteers to maintain the flower beds at City Park last summer. Volunteers from City Park Alliance, along with Greater Park Hill Community, Inc. and City Park Friends and Neighbors all worked hard to keep the gardens blooming and weed-free.
We regret the errors.
