Get Caught Red-Handed
May is National Get Caught Reading Month
By Tara Bannon Williamson
Get Caught Reading is supported by the Association of American Publishers nationwide and is a campaign to remind people of all ages how much fun it is to read. Studies show that children who are read to do better in school, get better jobs later in life and are more compassionate to others.
Even reading together for 15 minutes a day can make a big difference in a child’s life. Did you know that your child will be more likely to want to read if they catch you reading? Demonstrating that you find reading enjoyable and worth your time encourages them to read too.
Most of us are aware of illiteracy, but what about aliteracy? Aliteracy is the ability to read, but being uninterested in doing so. There are so many distractions during our everyday lives, that it can be far too easy to eschew reading. You don’t have to read a big fat biography of some smarty-pants to partake in the benefits of reading.
Whatever you enjoy reading – mysteries, romance, urban fiction, magazines, cookbooks, science fiction, travelogues, true crime, graphic novels and even listening to audiobooks – have immediate benefits to your everyday lives.
Stop by your favorite library anytime for reading suggestions tailored to your interests, lifestyle, inclinations and tastes. And as always, it’s all for free. Librarians are standing by NOW to suggest titles, formats and subjects that will have you joyfully getting caught reading all month long. Library programs like book clubs, author events and tech help for your devices are also available to get you engaged and reading.
