East Is ‘We The People’
Constitutional Scholars Headed To National Competition
GPHN Staff Report
The East High School Constitutional Scholars team won the Colorado state championship of the “We the People” competition on Dec. 13.
The national competition is run by the Center for Civic Education to enhance civic engagement among young people nationwide. The students compete in simulated congressional hearings about topics ranging from the historical foundations of government to the modern applications of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. The East team will go on to represent Colorado at the national competition in April.
The We the People competition began in 1987 to commemorate the bicentennial of the Constitution. East sent a team that first year and has continued to participate in the competition ever since. Led by co-teachers Matthew Fulford and Mandy Hostetter, East has a long history of success in this competition, and has won the nationals five times, including in 2019.
