41st Home Tour Set For Sept. 8

Summer is flying by and before you know it, it will be that time of year again. The 41st Annual Park Hill Home Tour & Street Fair will take place on Sunday, Sept. 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. At least five homes will be included in this year’s tour, which is the largest fundraiser for Greater Park Hill, Inc., and which just happens to be a lot of fun. Tour homes in Denver’s most architecturally diverse neighborhood and then enjoy a free Street Fair on the Forest Street Parkway between Montview Boulevard and 19th Avenue, complete with live entertainment, vendors, food trucks, a wine & beer garden and kids activities. This year the Street Fair will also include a drop-off e-recycling center for people who want to recycle their outdated or dead electronics, plus hourly sustainability demonstrations. Home Tour ticket sales are available online at parkhillhometour.org. Tickets can also be purchased now through the day of the event at the following locations: Cake Crumbs at 2216 Kearney Street, Spinelli’s at 4621 E. 23rd Ave., the Park Hill Library at Dexter and Montview and at the Park Hill Bookstore at 4620 E. 23rd Ave. Prices are $20 for adults (13-plus) $15 for seniors (65-plus) and $10 for children (7-12). Children 6 and under are free. Adult and senior ticket prices increase by $5 on the day of the event. The Park Hill Home Tour & Street Fair benefits GPHC Inc., a nonprofit registered neighborhood organization that promotes the character and vibrancy of Park Hill; provides resources, information, and advocacy; and preserves quality of life and the history of the neighborhood. Tour Historic Baker Homes

To whet your whistle for the Park Hill Home Tour, check out the Historic Baker Neighborhood Home Tour on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Baker neighborhood is south of downtown, and their tour this year will features six homes of various architectural styles, as well as a former theater-turned-distillery, a neighborhood church, and a Neo-Gothic school. Tickets cost $20, and increase $5 the day of. Proceeds support the Baker Historic Neighborhood Association with a portion donated to DCIS at Fairmont and other community programs. Time For A Garden Party 

The Denver Woman’s Press Club is holding its annual garden party on Tuesday, Aug. 6 from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The club is open to professional writers who are interested in DWPC membership. The garden party is designed to introduce potential members to meet fellow journalists, poets, fiction and non-fiction writers and other members, and learn about the club’s programs, including book signings and an annual jewelry sale. Looking For Revolutionaries

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is hosting a workshop on Saturday, Aug. 10 for prospective new members.  The workshop is from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. (with refreshments) at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St. Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership.  To learn more about the work of today’s DAR, visit www.dar.org. Walk In Their Shoes

The 2019 Biennial of the Americas Festival, in partnership with Riverfront Park Community Foundation, Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, and I Am Denver, will launch Empathy Museum’s “A Mile in My Shoes” exhibition in Denver on Friday, Aug. 9. The traveling exhibition is in Tail Tracks Plaza downtown, on 16th Street between Wewatta Street and Wynkoop streets. It was conceived by British artist Clare Patey in collaboration with philosopher and author Roman Krznaric, and allows participants to literally walk in someone else’s shoes while listening to a story about that person’s life. Empathy Museum originated in the United Kingdom and has traveled throughout Europe and to Australia, Brazil and Siberia. It was in New York City last year. In Denver, the exhibition will house between 30 and 40 pairs of shoes, alongside audio recordings of stories from the shoes’ owners. The exhibition is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Sept. 27. On Sept. 28, a visual representation of the project will move to Civic Center Park, where this year’s Biennial of the Americas Festival culminates with a free family-friendly event, “Cosmico Americas.” For more information, visit biennialoftheamericas.org or on Facebook, Instagram (@thebiennial) or Twitter (@thebiennial). 

Cash For Projects 

The City of Denver is soliciting proposals from organizations for neighborhood services projects to be funded in 2020 in one of the following focus areas:

• Nonprofit organizing for community capacity building to impact neighborhood revitalization.

• Economic development: business assistance for financial empowerment.

• Youth and adult services focused on increasing self-sufficiency, including literacy, independent living skills, and job training.

• Economic development: technical assistance for cooperative business models.

• Outreach efforts to promote available forms of assistance for economic development, employment, housing services and technical assistance. 

Priority consideration will be given to applications that have a geographic focus on the East Colfax, Elyria/Swansea, Globeville, Montbello, Northeast Park Hill, Sun Valley, Valverde, Villa Park, West Colfax and Westwood neighborhoods. Programs must be ready to implement services in the first quarter of 2020. The deadline to submit funding applications for neighborhood projects is Friday, Aug. 16 at 4 p.m.

Name Your Favorite Artist

Denver Arts & Venues is accepting nominations and applications for Denver Mayor’s Awards for Excellence in Arts & Culture through Friday, Aug. 9. The annual awards recognize individuals and organizations that make significant and lasting contributions to the artistic, cultural and creative landscape in the City and County of Denver. People can nominate an individual or organization through a simple form and Arts & Venues will follow up with the nominee for more information. Alternatively, individuals and groups may apply for an award directly. Nominations are being accepted in the following categories: Arts & Culture Youth, Arts & Culture Impact, Arts & Culture Innovation, Arts & Culture Global and IMAGINE 2020.
