Helen Wolcott’s Holiday Show & Sale Nov. 19 & 20
As she has every fall and spring for more than 40 years, Wolcott will open her Park Hill home on Saturday and Sunday Nov. 19 and 20, hosting a group of artists and artisans who show and sell their creations. Wolcott specializes in jewelry (costume, silver and more). Also lined up for the November show are: Ann Lederer (silk and photography), Mark Flaningam (wood), Karen Rudisill (stained and fused glass), Cristina de Palma-Vega (fabric and paper art), Carmen Curtis Basham (pottery), Pamela Bliss and Jeanette Carter (weavings and knittings), Anita Kienker (quilted creations) and Sirintorn Clay (bags and specialty teas). Stop by 2309 Clermont St. from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. Everybody is welcome. Bring a friend and toast the season with hot mulled wine or herb tea.
Music And History
Historic Denver is partnering with the American Guild of Organists for the 5th Annual Pipe Organ Tour. This year’s event is from 9:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3 and includes wonderful organ music, architecture, and history. The Organ Tour will begin at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church downtown at 19th & California Street. We will then proceed by foot to Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church, followed by Saint John’s Cathedral. At each church you will hear about the history and architecture from a local historian and then listen to a selection of music. Each organist will share the history and characteristics of each instrument. Just In Time For Election Day
Art Gym Denver presents Political BS, to coincide with the upcoming presidential election. The art show will highlight the various ways artists reflect political statements and how it affects their own work. Each artist will present their own depiction of the ramifications politics has on social issues. Political BS will feature the work of Jack Estenssoro, Michael Gadlin, Jean Herman, Kelly Knopp, Tony Ortega, Jennifer Parisi, Lars Roeder, Adam Sheetz, Annalee Schorr, Vickie Stevinson and William Stoehr. The opening reception is Thursday, Nov. 3 from 5 to 8 p.m., where you can meet the artists of Political BS and enjoy light refreshment and hors d’oeuvres. The exhibition will be on display through Nov. 26. The Art Gym Gallery is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at 1460 Leyden St.

Women, Romance and Books
Women, romance and books are featured at a literary salon on Sunday, Nov. 6, from 3 to 5 p.m. Three authors will lead a lively discussion about writing from the female perspective and the feminine trek through romance publishing. The event is presented by the Denver Woman’s Press Club, at 1325 Logan St. Light refreshments will be provided, and parking is free in the lot just to the north of the building. Denver Potters Fall Show
The annual Denver Potters Association Fall Show brings together more than 40 top local artists. In addition to one-of-a-kind functional and sculptural ceramics, the show and sale will feature the best in jewelry, glass and wood creations. The show opens Thursday, Dec. 1 at the Sixth Avenue United Church, 3250 E. Sixth Ave. (corner of Sixth & Adams). Sale hours are Thursday, Dec. 1, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 2, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 3, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, Dec. 4, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. As always, admission is free. Volunteers of America offers countless opportunities for your family, co-workers, or just you to volunteer during the holiday season. The programs that VOA offers include Basket of Joy (holiday fruit baskets for low income seniors or seniors who might not have any other visitors for the holidays); Adopt-a-Family Project (people are paired with a family in need to provide gifts for the holidays); Thanksgiving Dinner Basket sign-ups, Thanksgiving Day Meals on Wheels deliverers, Christmas Gifts for Meals on Wheels deliverers, volunteers to distribute Christmas Dinner Baskets, and more. Ice Skating & Film At DIA
Denver International Airport is offering several upcoming free events, including an Ice Skating Rink that will be open to the public from Nov. 25 to Jan. 1. The rink, at DEN Plaza, is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
The Plaza Center rink is 34’ wide and 60’ long, compete with staffing, programming, and skates for all ages. In addition, DIA presents Film on the Fly – Holiday, on Dec. 15, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. at DEN Plaza (weather permitting). Film on the Fly – Holiday is the finale in DIA’s 2016 film series. Heaters will be set up for warmth and comfort, DEN-branded blankets will be provided, along with warm holiday treats including pastries, roasted nuts and popcorn, hot chocolate/hot cider and a cash bar. An Ethiopian Odyssey
Denver meets Addis Ababa in “An Ethiopian Odyssey II: A Celebration of Art, Cultural Connections and Books,” an exhibition of original paintings, photographs and crafts at the Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library, 2401 Welton St. “An Ethiopian Odyssey II” culminates on Thursday, Nov. 3 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with a public auction and fundraiser for Ethiopia Reads, a nonprofit organization that has planted more than 70 libraries for children across Ethiopia. The exhibition includes paintings by Nahosenay Negussie and Akilu Temesgen, two of Ethiopia’s most celebrated modern painters, as well as the Denver-based photographers Mahlet Samuel and Greg Cradick and muralist Mimi Finn. Works by Stephanie Schlatter, Yacob Bizuneh and Troy Zaushny are also included in the exhibition and will be available for purchase via a live and online silent auction. “An Ethiopian Odyssey II” supports the Hawassa Reading Center, which this year celebrates 10 years of operation in the country’s southern region. The Hawassa Reading Center has long enjoyed support from the large network of Ethiopia Reads donors and volunteers based in Denver, which includes families with children adopted from Ethiopia, faith-based communities, schools and libraries, and members of the large Ethiopian American community in Metro Denver.
