Helen Thorpe to Speak at Park Hill Bookstore Event
Helen Thorpe, author of “Just Like Us,” and “Soldier Girls,” will speak at a fundraising event for the Park Hill Community Bookstore on Saturday, May 23, at the Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, 1980 Dahlia St.
A silent auction, with wine and refreshments, will open at 5:30 p.m., followed by Thorpe’s presentation at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are now on sale at the bookstore, 4620 E. 23rd Ave.
“Just Like Us” is a uniquely detailed account of four girls of Mexican ancestry, and how immigration laws impacted them and their families, has won numerous awards. “Soldier Girls,” Thorpe’s most recent book, is an equally exhaustive account of three young women who served in Afghanistan.
A graduate of Princeton, with a Master’s degree in English literature from Columbia, Thorpe has written many articles and essays that have appeared in such publications as The New Yorker, The New York Times Magazine, George, Harper’s Bizarre and Slate.
Thorpe has also worked in public radio, producing stories broadcast on This American Life and Soundprint.
Proceeds from the May 23 event will go toward Colorado’s longest-operating (and perhaps only) nonprofit bookstore managed by volunteers. Founded in 1971, the bookstore offers more than 30,000 fiction and nonfiction titles. The store, with more than 800 members with about 40 who volunteer, donates thousands of books to shelters, churches, schools, correctional institutions and other agencies.
The store is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. The phone number is 303-355-8508.
Get Ready For the 3rd Annual Park Hill Yard Sale
The 3rd Annual Park Hill Community Yard Sale will be Saturday, May 30 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participation is completely free for both sellers and shoppers and will take place rain or shine. The event, which is sponsored by local Realtors from Cherry Creek Properties, had over 130 participating homes last year. Event organizers hope to make this year even better with a focus on getting more shoppers into the neighborhood. The Yard Sale will be a great way for residents to re-purpose unneeded household items after the inevitable spring cleaning and put some extra money in their pockets. Residents of the greater Park Hill area are invited to register for the yard sale by sending an email to GPHCyardsale@ymail.com with their name, phone number, address and the top 3 categories of items they will be selling. Sellers and shoppers alike, mark your calendars, you won’t want to miss this!
