Birdland: Tiny and Bright
This little bird is plump and short-tailed, with a bit of a messy-looking buffy face and an eye ring. Ochre-breasted Antpittas are found in the subtropics from Costa Rica to Bolivia. But you have to look hard — they can be shy and they tend to stay on or near the ground in the forest, often perching on small limbs just a couple of meters high, swinging their bodies from side to side. This Ochre-breasted Antpitta was photographed pre-pandemic by Park Hill resident Mark Silverstein near Mindo, Ecuador.
