Birdland: Hello, Spring
It’s March, and that means the gangly, prehistoric-looking Double-crested Cormorants have returned to Duck Lake in City Park. Cormorants fly low across the water, diving down occasionally to retrieve a snack. When they want to dry off, they perch near the water with their wings half spread. The cormorants at Duck Lake are pairing up and sprucing up their nests, made of sticks and grass and sometimes trash, in the island rookery trees. They’ll generally have one to two broods each season. Photo by Park Hill resident Mark Silverstein
