Birdland: Cacophony In Winter
There’s an old saying that when four crows are cawing near your house, you’re destined for good fortune and prosperity. Seven crows means you’re going to travel or move. Eight crows means imminent sorrow and grief. Superstition doesn’t say much about what happens when hundreds of crows — such groupings are called a murder — suddenly descend on your lawn and in the trees around your house. But you can bet there will be a lot of noisy caw-cawing. Crows are known to forage and roost together in large numbers during the winter, but then dissipate in March, when breeding season begins. This crow was photographed in Park Hill by Mark Silverstein.
