Kidding Around
These Great Blue Herons might be fledglings right now, but they belong to the subspecies that grow to become the largest of the North American herons. In this photo, it looks like the fella on the left is hungry and using a “clapper” technique to try to convince its sibling to produce some food for it. (Young herons do this to signal their parents to regurgitate food when they return to the nest.) These young Great Blue Herons were photographed at Belmar Park in Lakewood by Park Hill photographer Mark Silverstein.
