East High won its first fall football playoff game in more than 15 years, defeating the Mullen Mustangs 23-7 on Nov. 3 at All City Stadium.
No. 13 seed East entered the playoffs with an 8-2 record, including an undefeated 5-0 in the 5A Metro North Conference. Mullen was 6-4 and was seeded No. 20.
East won a game that was much closer than the final score. The Angels managed to stop Mullen’s dangerous offense with the exception of one first half touchdown. Junior running back Sean Campell led the Angels’ offensive ground assault with 19 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown, while East’s defense was dominant. Senior defensive lineman Elias Goss had three tackles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown. Senior Landon Holloway had 18 total tackles, and ferocious junior edge-rusher D.J. Crowe had three sacks, three passes defended, 12 total tackles and a safety which effectively ended the game.

East’s football playoff run ended in the second round on Nov. 10 with a 24-41 loss to No. 4-seed Pine Creek. But in finishing the season with a 9-3 record, East is well positioned for success in the years to come. For the team’s achievements, Head Coach Stephen Ruempolhamer was named Coach of the Year in the 5A North Metro league.
