BECOME A MASTER COMPOSTER
The Denver Master Composter program is an excellent opportunity for individuals to become involved in their community while learning all about backyard composting. Selected volunteers will learn all about composting and recycling while having fun and meeting others who are committed to environmentally friendly gardening and waste management. Each Denver Master Composter volunteer will receive 40 hours of instruction in compost science, compost bin construction, worm composting, urban gardening, recycling and solid waste management, and community outreach. In exchange, volunteers will return 40 hours of service teaching to inform area residents about composting and recycling practices.
Interested volunteers do not need to be experienced composters or gardeners to participate, but must be able to commit the time necessary to attend the training classes, facility tours and demonstration site sessions. A $35 fee is required to help cover the cost of certain materials (this fee can be waived for extreme hardship cases). Training classes will be held about once a week for ten consecutive weeks starting in late February. Classes are held on Monday evenings, a few Saturday mornings and one Friday field trip day in April.
Approximately 30 enthusiastic and committed volunteers are selected each year for this program. To apply or express interest in becoming a Denver Master Composter, please call Denver Urban Gardens at 303-292-9900 or send an email with your full name and phone number to DenverRecycles@DenverGov.org. Individuals will need to apply by mid-December for the 2013 program. Applicants will be invited to a short interview where they can learn more about the program and we can learn more about you.
