Home Tour Set For Sept. 23
The 40th Annual Park Hill Home Tour & Street Fair will take place on Sunday, Sept. 23 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tour seven homes in Denver’s most architecturally diverse neighborhood and then enjoy the free Street Fair with vendors, live entertainment, food trucks, a wine & beer garden, and kids activities. Home Tour ticket sales are available online at parkhillhometour.org (check the website for additional retail locations where you can pick up tickets). Prices are $20 for adults (13-plus) $15 for seniors (65-plus) and $10 for children (7-12). Children 6 and under are free. Adult and senior ticket prices increase by $5 on the day of the event. The Park Hill Home Tour & Street Fair benefits Greater Park Hill Community, Inc. (GPHC), a nonprofit registered neighborhood organization that promotes the character and vibrancy of Park Hill; provides resources, information, and advocacy; and preserves quality of life and the history of the neighborhood.
Free Solar Fair Aug. 4
Learn about solar options and how they impact your home, including low and no-cost programs. A free solar fair is set for Saturday, Aug. 4, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pauline Robinson Library, 5575 E 33rd Ave. Everyone is welcome. You don’t have to spend a lot to make a big difference with solar. Come meet experts and figure out the best option for your home and budget.
Affordable Housing For All
AARP Colorado is hosting two community forums to discuss affordable housing on Thursday, Aug. 9 and Thursday, Aug. 23. Everyone is welcome to attend the free events. For increasing numbers of Denver residents, finding affordable housing and avoiding displacement due to gentrification is a growing challenge. During the forums, people can find out if they are eligible for housing assistance programs under Denver’s Affordable Housing Ordinance. The Aug. 9 forum runs from 9 a.m. to noon at New Hope Baptist Church, 3701 Colorado Blvd. The Aug. 23 forum is from 9 a.m. to noon at the SEIU-Justice for All Center at 2525 W. Alameda Ave. Among the topics to be discussed: How to avoid bad mortgage loans and dealing with the threat of foreclosure and resources available from housing assistance community organizations. The forums are free, but reserving your seat ahead of time is required. Deadlines to R.S.V.P. for the Aug. 9 forum is Aug. 6, and the deadline to for the Aug. 23 forum is Aug. 20. Loving The High Line Canal
The High Line Canal Conservancy is reaching out to Denver citizens to raise awareness about planning efforts to reimagine the High Line Canal as a 71-mile long park. As part of this effort, the conservancy is planning a Dogs + Donuts free community event on Saturday, Sept. 8 from 8 to 10 a.m. Bring your pup, meet other High Line Canal lovers and enjoy coffee, donuts and Santiago’s breakfast burritos while they last. The event is at the Community College of Aurora near the DeLaney Community Farm, at 16000 E. Centretech Parkway in Aurora. For more details check out highlinecanal.org/dogs-donuts.
New Exhibits At The Art Gym
Art Gym Denver kicks off its latest exhibit, Keeping House, with an opening reception on Thursday, Aug. 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. Created by Austin, Tex.-based artist Veronica Ceci, Keeping House is a traveling exhibition consisting of printmaking, installation and sculpture exploring the issues with labor in our country. Ceci brings together the three parts of her vocational identity – artist, housekeeper and master printmaker – to discuss the many issues our country faces concerning poor labor practices. Also opening on Aug. 9 at the Art Gym is an exhibit called Black and White on the Surface. The reception also runs from 5 to 8 p.m. Black and White on the Surface combines artist Hannah Leathers’s ink drawings of genderless creatures of her own making with Peter Stevinson’s charcoal drawings depicting human lust and passion. Both exhibits are free and open to the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Aug. 31. The Art Gym is at 1460 Leyden St. For more information visit ArtGymDenver.com.
Lessons From The Great Depression
Join the group Active Minds for a look back at the Great Depression. Among the discussion topics: the origins of the Depression and its legacy as well as take a look at it through the lens of our current economic environment. The free program is Wednesday, Aug. 8 from 2 to 3 p.m. and again on Thursday, Aug. 9 from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. The program is at Sam Gary Library, 2961 Roslyn St.
The Future of Bees
Bees are vital pollinators, making possible much of the food humans eat. In recent years, however, crucial bee species have experienced significant loss. Since the 1990s, the bumblebee population has plunged almost 90 percent. Additionally, since 2006, a malady called Colony Collapse Disorder has afflicted honeybee populations. Join Active Minds to explore the world of bees and examine the factors that are affecting these important species. This free event is Thursday, Aug. 16 from 2 to 3 p.m. at Windsor Gardens, 597 S. Clinton St.
