Address to the Continuating Class of 2014
By Kylah Coleman, Smiley 8th grader
Editor’s Note: The following is the speech that student Kylah Coleman delivered to her peers during Smiley Middle School’s final continuation ceremony on June 5.
Khaki, black pants, blue and grey shirts
Oh no! This is gonna hurt
Eeewww uniforms
First day of school and I’m so scared
I don’t think I’m quite prepared
Hmmm wait! 8 classes in different rooms?
I’m already doomed
Kids so big and tall
All the long halls
I guess this year
I’ll have to face my fear
I’m a 6th grader
OK this year shouldn’t’ be so bad
I know all these lads!
Oh school starts later.
I’m gonna be a hater.
To start off the year
We went to the Rockies game and cheered
This year was not exciting
Except there was some fighting
And I don’t mean students,
I mean over Smiley
We heard the news Smiley’s closing
I guess like foreclosing
Because of this we lost some of our best
But it didn’t make us any less
Like I said, this year was OK
But hey!
I’m’ just a 7th grader
Aye! We made it!
I made it
The year to “run” the school
Have those grade duels
So much to be happy about this year
I have no fears
8th grade dinner dance
We all felt the enhance
Of something great
June 5th, 2014 is the date
Continuation
Yes, yes
We are the best
The 8th graders
I can’t believe this day has come already. To start, I would like to give a big thank you to all staff members at Smiley Middle School.
Now Smiley means something different to every person. To some, Smiley is known as the big, old, rowdy school in Park Hill. To me, Smiley also means that big, old, rowdy school in Park Hill. It also means a lot of things to me: family tradition, historic, beautiful, educational, and precious. I’m sure I’m not the only one tonight that has family members who also went to Smiley. My grandmother went to Smiley, my mom went to Smiley, my sister went to Smiley, and now I go to Smiley.
I learned a lot at Smiley. I learned from the teachers and the students. The students here are great. We’re great in sports; the mathletics and semantics teams are killers; the drama department we had was amazing. Also, band was nice. The students here have achieved great things: the science fair, culture fair, and Night of the Notables.
Smiley will always be close to my heart. I’ve met some of my best friends for life at Smiley. Smiley’s gonna be the place where I take my kids and tell them all the crazy stories.
Yes, Smiley is leaving us, but that doesn’t mean all the great memories will too. You know what they say: all great things must come to an end.
You see, I will, and I hope all of you will be a Cougar. Keep Smiley Middle School in your hearts and forever be a Cougar!
