A Lot Of Help From Our Friends
Food Pantry Needs Range From Spaghetti To Spam
By Sierra Fleenor
Executive Director, GPHC, Inc.
As with each month, we have many words of gratitude to offer to GPHC’s supporters, including volunteers, donors, and members.
Thank you to all of our ongoing volunteers who give their time in support of our food pantry, weekend food program and the newspaper. We are lucky for those who choose to spend time and energy bolstering our programs. We appreciate every can you’ve sorted, labeled, and stocked. We appreciate every bag of food you’ve assembled and taken to our schools. We appreciate every newspaper you’ve bundled and delivered. Every day you make our community stronger and better.
There are not many food pantries that are able to subsist solely on donations, but your generosity keeps our pantry stocked and neighbors fed.
Our ongoing donors, both individuals and organizations, have helped our pantry continue to bring in specific items we need for both our food pantry and weekend food program. We are grateful for those of you who donate via your faith community, a local business, or by bringing items to GPHC.
1,400 items donated
Two special groups have recently provided significant donations. We’d like to thank the McAuliffe Middle School students who fundraised for the food pantry. The student organizers who pulled this together also added a volunteering component, rewarding students who worked hard to fundraise with an opportunity to volunteer at the food pantry during the school day.
We really appreciate the creative thinking and the time and donations given to GPHC. Thank you also to the school administrators, teachers and staff at McAuliffe.
Thanks also to Susan Mountain-Morgan and the Food Fight Food Drive for a donation of more than 1,400 items to the food pantry. Each year Susan runs food drives at several locations in honor of her birthday, using the occasion as an excuse to boost the stores of several pantries in Denver.
We’d also like to thank all of the new and renewed members of GPHC, Inc. Thank you for joining and staying a part of the Registered Neighborhood Organization. Funds raised through our membership drive are a huge part of how we fund our programs, events, and services.
If you’re interested in becoming a member, please check out our website at greaterparkhill.org or give us a call at 303-388-0918. We’d love to share about all the great work we’re doing even more in depth.
Grocery wish list
Our food programs have ongoing needs. For our food pantry we are particularly in need of canned peaches, mixed fruit, applesauce, and any other cans or jars of fruit. We also always need canned meats especially tuna, chunk chicken, Vienna sausages, and Spam. We could also use peanut butter, ramen, rice, dehydrated mashed potatoes, oatmeal (large canisters), hearty soups, pasta and rice sides, and black-eyed peas.
Our clients rarely have access to fresh food, so donations of fresh or frozen meat and dairy are always appreciated. We distribute all fresh and frozen items.
Our clients frequently request hygiene products, including lotion, bars of soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and mouthwash. We distribute both regular size and travel size hygiene items. The pantry also stocks laundry detergent (in smaller containers, if possible) and dish soap.
The weekend food program is designed to provide food to students who often don’t have access when school isn’t in session. Program organizers are in need of individually wrapped cereal bars, individual servings of instant oatmeal, individual cereal bowls, and regular size boxes of “kid friendly” cereals.
We also accept financial donations for both our food pantry and weekend food program, as well as the other programs we offer. If you’d like to make a donation, you can visit our website at: greaterparkhill.org or call our office at 303-388-0918
Donations to our food programs can be made at GPHC’s office (2823 Fairfax St.) at the hours specified below. We also accept donations of non-perishable items at the Park Hill Branch Library and Cake Crumbs during their regular business hours. We cannot distribute expired items, so please check your items before making a donation.
If you have any questions about our work or how to get involved with GPHC as a volunteer, donor or member, you can check out our website at: greaterparkhill.org, give us a call at 303-388-0918, or drop by our office at 2823 Fairfax Street Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
