Be There: East Area Plan
The Denver Planning Department is hosting a community meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at Johnson & Wales University to discuss the city’s draft recommendations for the East Area Plan. Residents are encouraged to attend and share their opinions about the plan, which proposes increased density to impact more than 31,000 residents living between Colorado Boulevard and Yosemite Street to the west-east, and 23rd Avenue to 6th Avenue to the north-south. Concurrently, the city is also proposing a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) down Colfax Avenue, reducing car traffic along Colfax to one lane going each direction. The plan was detailed in last month’s Greater Park Hill News. The plan has generated intense controversy, including the formation of a group (Denver East Neighborhoods First: denvereastneighborhoodsfirst.com) which has been working to alert impacted residents. The Oct. 29 meeting is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Johnson & Wales, 1900 Olive St. The city’s draft plan can be reviewed at DenverGov.org/eastplan. Teen Anxiety On The Rise
On Tuesday, Oct. 29, the Lowry Speaker Series hosts Susan McClahanan, Ph.D., a licensed clinical psychologist who will discuss the uptick in anxiety and depression among adolescents and young adults. McClanahan, the chief clinical officer of the Eating Recovery Center in Lowry, will address these diagnoses and related conditions, and talk about what we can do to help young people. The program is from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Eisenhower Chapel, 293 Roslyn St. Admission is free. No tickets or reservations are necessary. For more information, call 303-344-0481.
Love Your Neighbor
Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church, at 1980 Dahlia St., is hosting two public forums in October to address economic justice issues. “Love Your Neighbor – Equity in Denver Public Schools” is the topic on Sunday Oct. 13. Speakers from the Park Hill Neighbors for Equity in Education (PHNEED) group will be on hand to discuss their ongoing efforts. On Sunday, Oct. 20, Paolo Diaz, a poverty reduction and outreach manager in Adams County, will present a forum “How Adams County is Addressing the Challenge of Poverty.” Both programs begin at 9:30 a.m. and are free and open to the public.
Correction: Last month’s news story about the East Area Plan noted the proposal included an eight-story building at 13th Avenue and Krameria. Current recommendations would allow five stories at that intersection. The proposed 8-story building would actually be two blocks north, at Krameria and Colfax. We regret the error.
