While many popular mass sporting events have been canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 11th Annual Broadmoor Pikes Peak Cycling Hill Climb took place as scheduled on Aug 8. when more than 200 riders of all categories, took on the challenge of riding 12.42 miles and 4,725 vertical feet to the 14,115 summit of Pikes Peak, America’s Mountain. Pikes Peak, west of Colorado Springs in the Pike National Forest, is named in honor of American explorer Zebulon Pike – who never actually summited the peak. Now, of course, you can cycle to the top, or drive, if you aren’t up for the ride. From the summit, the views of the mountains to the west and the north, and to the east of the plains and Colorado Springs far below, are spectacular.
