The Power of Inspiration
A Granddaughter Pays Tribute to her Park Hill Grandparents
Angel Keefe
I was once asked to define what it meant to be inspired. My response was rather instantaneous. Behind every inspiration is an iconic figure that has an inner-strength seemingly greater than that of our own. Held close to my heart are two phenomenal individuals that possess an indescribable level of perseverance, intelligence, unconditional love, and support that have always been the greatest of all my inspirations – my grandparents.
As both a native to Denver and the Park Hill Community, I have seen significant growth and change over the past several decades. The shift in paradigm has created a solid foundation to cultivating a more involved community, and is highly visible through the continued increase in neighborhood programs, fundraising events and informational resources to further raise awareness. I take great pride knowing the same two people that make such a significant, positive impact in my life also share their legacy among the Park Hill community.
They serve as instrumental role models that depict the underlying meaning to “making a difference” as active volunteers over the past ten years, and residents to the area for over forty years. Their genuine demeanor is reflective the patience and understanding, keen sense of knowledge and awareness, and the physical and emotional strength it takes to withstand the challenges, shortfalls and the risks associated with the unexpected.
Born in the “Silent Generation,” many notable milestones and historical events such as the Great Depression, World War II, Korean War and start of the Civil Rights Movement took place during their most formative years through adulthood. There are volumes of unspeakable truths derived from the paths they once walked, that encompass the many things once seen, heard, or felt, both literally and figuratively. I often reflect upon the many times the both of them have shared the most sincere and heart-filled words of guidance, support and encouragement that I will not only cherish, but will also share with my children at their times of need.
For each rite of passage I have successfully endured thus far, a constant that carries me through any crossroads along the way are their sweet words of wisdom; “To thine own self be true” (Grandmother), and “Always take the time to think it through” (Grandpa). The knowledge and experience they both possess, paired with their impeccable health and continued outgoing and busy lifestyle, affirm just how amazing they truly are. This especially rings true to our family, which now is that of five generations – one child, two grand-daughters, six great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
I am humbled with pride and honor to have been blessed with such beautiful souls that will always be my heroes, role models, best friends and guiding light. Together they have consistently been present in my life, and I will forever be grateful for the memories we have created, and for the many that have yet to be made.
My grandparents are not only a gift to us all, but a shining example of what we all as individuals, soul mates and contributors to society should strive to be. They are a synchronous unit that depicts what love, devotion and respect are all about; placing one another before themselves, seeking only the gratification that makes them whole – a heart to love, a mind to survive and a hand to always hold.
