TALK OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD: Stepping Up To Give Back
Volunteers Keep Us In Business. Here Are Two Who Deserve Special Recognition
By Colette Carey | Executive Director, GPHC, Inc.
It’s a fact of life at a nonprofit organization like Greater Park Hill Community, that we can’t do half of the things we do without volunteers.
From our all-volunteer board of directors to the event committees to our food pantry team, so much of what we do is supported by those who give their time for free.
I love that this section of the newspaper regularly highlights those who help this machine run. By the time this issue hits the streets, we will have many more people to thank for lending their hands to help us make the Sept. 27 Home Tour and Street Fair a success.
That said, there are two volunteers who have recently displayed some amazing promise for their own futures, and for the future of the culture of giving.
Felix Nitczynski, a student at East High School, reached out to us at the beginning of the summer to offer to help the organization with anything we needed. Felix jumped right in to help our food pantry volunteers every Wednesday and came in on Saturday afternoons to help unload, weigh and record the produce donations from the East Farmers Marketing and The Urban Farm. He was such a welcome addition to our team, and we’re grateful for his outreach and time all summer.

Also from East High School, Janoha Tewodros stepped forward, first to volunteer with some friends at the Garden Walk. She has continued to collaborate with GPHC on leading a new Youth Committee to help support events and to help boost our Thanksgiving Box Giveaway. Janoha and her team at WOKE (Women of Kolour Empowerment) look to add depth and meaning to our volunteer efforts at GPHC and to build management and enterprise skills.
So excited to see these young people step forward to give back.
As our annual events start to wind down, our need for volunteers wanes a bit. However, please consider reaching out for other opportunities to help – including running for a seat on the GPHC Board of Directors if your part of the neighborhood needs representation.
