Summer Full Of Thanks
What We Need, Who We Appreciate
By Sierra Fleenor
GPHC Executive Director
What a month May was. We had several events, operated the food pantry, and continued planning our annual upcoming special events. In addition, we were busy renewing memberships for members who renew in January through June. We have received numerous donations of food, funds, and time that have made the last month at GPHC incredible.
While there are so many folks to extend appreciation for their support, we would particularly like to thank Tables Restaurant, Amy Barrett, and all those who attended our Dine Out event to support GPHC’s food programs.
We would also like to thank those who participated in our 5th Annual Community Yard Sale on May 6. In all, 37 folks chose to donate a portion of their yard sale proceeds to benefit the Weekend Food Program at GPHC, which provides nutritional support to school children in Greater Park Hill who might not have access otherwise. We are grateful for your support.
Additionally, we’d like to thank the sponsors who made our May Garden in a Box event a smashing success. Thanks to Ace on the Fax and city Councilman Chris Herndon, we distributed seeds and seedlings to more than 60 gardeners. We’d also like to thank Patrick Quinn and Cat Franco for their donations of seeds and seedlings.
While we were handing out seeds and seedlings, Caleb Depledge, Sandra Volkert, Noni Horwitz, and Jason Barth tackled getting the GPHC Food Pantry garden started by cleaning up beds and planting vegetables. Thanks to all of you for making our day such a success.
We have a few needs this month for our food programs, as well as for our gardening efforts.
For the food programs, we need individual fruit and applesauce cups, small boxes of raisins, individual cereal and granola bars, canned fruit and canned meats (spam, chicken, salmon, Vienna sausages). We also need travel and regular sized bar soap, shampoo, conditioner, bath gel, lip balm and lotion. Please remember, we cannot distribute opened or expired food.
We are still looking for donations for our large flower planters and our new 4×4 garden bed, which were generously donated to us by CoCal Landscape and Patti Iwasaki. To help fill these, we need rocks (for drainage), good soil, and plants (evergreens, small trees, perennials). If you would like to donate any of these items or gift cards to a garden center, please let us know.
We accept donations Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at our office, at 2823 Fairfax St. If those hours do not work for you, you can also donate non-perishable items at the Park Hill Branch of Denver Public Library (Montview and Dexter) or at Cake Crumbs (23rd and Kearney) during their business hours. They’ll make sure we get the items.
Thank you to all our donors and volunteers listed below. We wouldn’t be able to accomplish all that we do without each and every one of you. If you would like to become a volunteer or donor, please visit our website at greaterparkhill.org or contact us at info@greaterparkhill.org or 303-388-0918.
