Can It Be, Winter Is Finally Over?
By Barbara Armendariz, Garden Walk Co-Chair
Spring is in the air, trees are blooming all around, grass is getting greener, tulips and daffodils are poking their colorful heads up through the dirt. Wait! Can it be that winter is really over?
Well, not so fast – surely there will be more snow coming our way. “Oh yes,” you say, “It’s Colorado weather. If you don’t like it, just wait 10 minutes.” But, just hold on and pay attention – Park Hill gardeners are out and about in their yards, hauling out spades and rakes, cleaning up dried leaves and lining up at garden shops.
Yes, it is time to get ready for the 16th annual Park Hill Garden Walk. This year’s event is Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Nine generous Park Hill gardeners have been busy getting their gardens ready for visitors. The day is devoted to experienced and novice gardeners alike, artist lovers, folks who just want to look, walkers and bike riders. All are invited into some of the loveliest gardens in Park Hill. You can tour gardens big and small, with beds of everything from fragrant roses to heritage tomatoes, trellises covered with clematis, roses and honeysuckle.
Visit a garden with amazing hand built ponds, streams and a waterfall. Come in and visit Whitey, a 12-year old koi. Whitey is actually gold and lives in his pond year-round along with a rainbow of other colorful fish. Wander through beautiful patio spaces designed for lazy afternoons, meals with family and friends on warm summer evenings and for optimal gazing possibilities into the Colorado night sky.
Every garden will have a resident Colorado artist who will exhibit their work all day. Watercolor and oil paintings, sculptures of metal and ceramic, works in other media, traditional and modern will be available for viewing throughout the day in each garden.
Many Denver businesses sponsor the gardens, with donations that help the Greater Park Hill Community, Inc. Last year their generous contributions helped raise more than $10,000. The effort that goes into our Garden Tour each year is the result of many folks coming together to build a stronger and better community.
Join us on June 18 and also be a contributor to one of Denver’s wonderful neighborhoods. Everyone is welcome.
