Q&A: Lewi Gault of Lewi Gault Fitness

GPHN: What makes your workout unique?
LG: My workout is unique in the sense that anyone from any walk of life and level of fitness can take part. I can have a elite athlete standing next to a first timer both doing the same workout, and they will both get what they need. The key is using exercises that require the body to work as a complete unit. I use equipment including TRX, Kettlebells and the new RIP Trainer (for which I am one of the only trainers certified in the world!); these pieces of equipment allow exercises to be adapted for any body type, level of fitness and age.
GPHN:You lead a variety of workouts, but your morning boot camp at Smiley, in particular, must be pretty intense. What sort of results do you see from your clients?
LG:My boot camp course is as intense as the individual wants to make it – that’s the beauty of it and why I can get a range of personal fitness levels to participate. I push my clients to achieve what they are setting out to do because, after all, if everyone could push themselves as hard as they could 100 percent of the time, I wouldn’t have a job! That said, I am not going to be in someone’s face shouting and throwing Twinkies at them! I believe in positive encouragement and accountability, in place of fear and forced exercise.
I’ve seen a lot of great results: from big weight loss numbers, to bodies being toned and conditioned. One of my clients can now hit a tennis ball harder than she ever has before – all the other girls at tennis take cover when she’s on the court! I also provide meal plans and nutritional information for all my clients, that they can take or leave, but I see the biggest improvements when the client changes both their eating and workout habits.
GPHN: Why Park Hill?
LG: I moved to Park Hill from Scotland around three years ago. My wife and I recently moved when we had our first child, but we are looking to move back to Park Hill as we have found that the community we are in now does not have the same ‘neighborhood feel’. That’s why I love doing my boot camp here: everyone helps each other out, and there is a great sense of camaraderie!
GPHN: After the City Park shooting, you decided to donate a month’s proceeds to Officer Hollis’ estate. Why?
LG: I decided to donate July’s proceeds to Officer Hollis’ estate as soon as I saw the news on TV. It struck home since my wife and I attend City Park Jazz quite regularly. Being a new father, I was heartbroken for Officer Hollis’ daughter who now has to grow up without a mother – one of the most tragic things that can happen in life for a child – and I thought about all the what-ifs if that were to happen to my family. I guess the point wasn’t really about how much money I could make for the family, but about showing that sense of community and to let that young girl know that there are people out there who care about what happened to her mom and care about what’s going to happen to her.
GPHN: Where can I sign up?
LG: Boot camp runs weekdays at 6 a.m. on the tennis courts behind Smiley Middle School. I encourage people to come try boot camp just to see if it’s a good fit, but I won’t lie by saying that it is an easy workout. No matter your level of fitness, I can guide you through the appropriate steps to achieve whatever your goal. Right now, I am offering Park Hill residents a trial week for just $1. Come as much (or as little) as you like for the week. At the end of the week, we can assess your needs and get you plugged into the program. If it’s not for you, there is no obligation to continue. I encourage everyone to try it out first before signing up for the full package.
