News: Nine Days On Strike
In late January King Soopers grocery workers approved a new three-year contract that union leaders describe as “the most significant wage increase ever secured by a United Food and Commercial Workers local for grocery workers.”
In addition to the wage increase — $5 an hour for some employees — the contract also creates more full-time employment opportunities and more stringent workplace safety measures. The contract was struck after employees spent nine days on the picket line. During the strike, former presidential candidate Bernie Sanders tweeted his support for the workers, highlighting the fact that company CEO makes more than $20 million a year.
