53 Years Ago In Park Hill
In August, 1966 the Denver Post reported on a meeting that then-Denver Mayor Tom Currigan and 19 city officials convened at Montview Boulevard Presbyterian Church to provide city updates and listen to neighborhood concerns.
“Park Hill is a truly American model neighborhood of today and tomorrow,” Currigan told the overflow crowd of more than 700.
The following are a few of the comments from officials on various neighborhood-specific topics. Remember readers, this was 53 years ago. As they say, the more things change, the more they stay the same.
• Liquor store: The most heated moments of the meeting were caused by public resentment to the city’s granting of a liquor license at 3381 Holly St.
• Dogs: “A solution to dogs running loose is to file a formal complaint. Also, if you can catch the dog in your yard or garage, it will be picked up.”
• Traffic: “A signal light will be mounted north of Smiley Junior High School at East 26th Avenue and Holly Street.”
• Swimming Pool: “Funds for a Park Hill swimming pool will be available in a year or two. The problem is where to put it.”
• Streets: “Any plans to widen East 23rd Avenue are way off in the distant future.”
• Motorcycle Noise: We’re examining legal ways of controlling motorcycle noise. Meanwhile, if a specific noise disturbs you, call the police.”
