How Do You See Denver?
Big Blue Bears & Spirit of The West On New Library Cards
By Becky Corning, Pauline Robinson Branch Librarian
This year, your library card may feature a drawing of the big blue bear sitting on the big red chair, a graphic representation of Denver neighborhoods, or a photo of the Spirit of the West structure.
Last summer, Denver Public Library asked residents to submit their best visual representations of the city to be used on library cards. More than 200 submissions were entered.
The judges chose the following four final designs:
• Nathan Greyman took DPL’s “bookstar” – our iconic logo – and stylized it with color
• Tiffany Tomlin-Shanks incorporated several well-known Denver landmarks into one setting for her entry. Denver artist Laurence Argent’s Big Blue Bear is sitting atop Donald Lipski’s famous red chair, while the Yearling reads along.
• Dustan Nichols’ map-inspired card provides a graphic representation of Denver neighborhoods. Roads and landmarks become colorful shapes in this design. One library employee noted that she can’t wait to use this one to show people how to get to the post office.
• DPL Event Coordinator Sherry Spitsnaugle’s entry features a photo of the “Spirit of the West.” The wooden structure, which is in the Western History and Genealogy Department at Central Library, is also known as the Derrick. It is made from lumber from a 1920s sawmill in Washington and is designed to mimic sights from the Old West: a derrick from the days of oil and gold mining, a teepee, or a windmill.
The final designs will appear on DPL library cards soon.
