City Council Elections: Just. Go. Vote.
Denver Municipal Election Day is Tuesday, May 7. Do you know where your candidate stands on issues you care about? For that matter do you know who your candidate is? Four years ago less than 29 percent of active registered voters turned out to vote in Denver’s municipal election. This year many groups are hoping to vastly increase voter participation.
Citywide, there are 52 candidates running for Mayor, Clerk & Recorder, Auditor and 13 City Council positions. In District 8, which includes Park Hill, Stapleton, East Colfax and Montbello, five council candidates are challenging incumbent Chris Herndon. Citywide, five candidates are taking on the incumbent mayor, Michael B. Hancock.
In any of the races, if one candidate does not win more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two contenders will face off in a June runoff election.
Ballots will be mailed to registered voters on Monday, April 15, and must be returned by 7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7.
Check out the website DenverDecides.org for quick links to register to vote, update your voter information, sign up to track your ballot, and find locations where you can drop off your completed mail ballot or vote in person.
Numerous public forums are scheduled in the neighborhood and district during April to allow voters to hear directly from their mayoral and city council candidates and about the issues. Check out the shaded box on the far right, page 13, for a listing of events.
