Birdland: Kaleidoscope Eyes
Adult Cooper’s Hawks have distinctive, rather vicious-looking red eyes. The eyes of a juvenile range from blue to grey as nestlings, then to yellow and sometimes even bright orange. The range of colors that you can see in the eyes of an accipiter – which is the name of the genus of birds of prey – can be a veritable kaleidoscope. This young Cooper’s Hawk was photographed at Belmar Park in Lakewood, by Park Hill resident Mark Silverstein.
