Be a Buddy, Not A Bully
Words To Live By At Bill Roberts
Staff report
Students at William “Bill” Roberts have adopted a buddy bench, a reminder of their commitment to practice respect of others.
“It struck me as an incredibly meaningful way to spread kindness and love, and to promote characteristics we want for our children like compassion, inclusion, acceptance and generally being a good friend,” says said Lisa Williams, parent to three current Bill Roberts students, and the mom who came up with the idea. The DPS E-8th grade school in Stapleton is also within the Park Hill enrollment zone.
Williams secured a donated bench from a school family, enlisted the help of the school’s Watch D.O.G.S. (Dads of Great Students) to repair the bench, and then recruited parent Nikki Tomkinson, a local artist, to personalize and paint the bench for the school.
Students unveiled the buddy bench during a school assembly in November. The wisdom and guidance behind being a buddy is pretty simple:
Being included is important to all of us
U may need a buddy or want to be a buddy
Different days may mean different feelings for everyone
Doing the right thing feels good
You MAKE the difference
