May The Force Be With You
DPL celebrates Star Wars Reads Month
By Becky Corning
Librarian, Pauline Robinson Branch
Padawans of every age enjoyed activities like launching TIE Fighters, watching Star Wars movies, and eating themed snacks in “Star Wars Reads Month” activities throughout the month of October at Denver Public Library.
At Pauline Robinson Branch, participants made Star Wars buttons and handprint art featuring Chewbacca and Yoda. On “the Park side of the force,” (Park Hill Branch), event attendees were invited to make light sabers and enjoy games and snacks.
If you didn’t get your fill of Star Wars during these events, you can definitely still enjoy reading: our catalog includes more than 500 fictional books about Star Wars. Or put some of the old movies on hold so you can catch up before Rogue One comes out in December.
Here are a few ideas to get you started…
• Star Wars Epic Yarns by Jack Wang – This is a series retelling episodes four through six using needle-felted characters. Each movie (A New Hope, Return of the Jedi, and The Empire Strikes Back) is presented in 12 images and 12 words.
• Origami Yoda series by Tom Angleberger – This series begins with “The Strange Case of Origami Yoda” and progresses through “Darth Paper Strikes Back” to “Princess Labelmaker to the Rescue” and “Emperor Pickletine Rides the Bus.” There is also an Origami Yoda activity book, Art2-D2’s Guide to Folding and Doodling.
• Star Wars: The Complete Visual Dictionary by David Reynolds – Includes illustrated descriptions of people, creatures, places, weapons, and other aspects of the first six films of the Star Wars saga.
